Abstract

English language is the metaphor of success. It is a medium of global communication. With the ever increasing global opportunities in all economic sectors, the requirement for fluent and proficient English-Speaking personnel is also increasing. In this cut-throat competitive world, one s fluency in English ascertains his/her sustainable development in terms of education and employment. This has led to a greater emphasis on required acquisition of English language (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing) skills. To enhance their required English language skills; students, employees, businessmen, professionals and housewives approach English Language Coaching Centers (ELCCs) for crash courses. newlineThe present study aims at analyzing the need, relevance and impact of ELCCs of Ballari District. It investigates into the emergence, proliferation and existence of such institutes. Though Ballari was an important hub for British ventures during the Raj; it has regional imbalance. Socially, educationally and economically it is considered to be one of the backward regions of Karnataka and is grouped under 371J-Hyderabad Karnataka Region. Yet, in terms of educational and professional endeavors people of Ballari district are striving hard to reach greater heights. Crippled with inadequately acquired English language skills and to enhance the same they approach agencies like ELCCs. Empathizing with these people approaching ELCCs, this research tries to take stock of present state of such institutes and looks for ways and means to improvise and upgrade the existing ELCCs. As of now there is no regulating authority over ELCCs in India in general and in Karnataka in particular. If the government initiates to regulate such institutes and set protocol for quality and standard maintenance in the service, it will be justice personified. newline newline
