Abstract: Membrane separation processes have become one of the emerging newlineTechnologies which have undergone a rapid growth during the past few newlineDecades Various membrane separation processes have been developed and newlineutilized in the field of potable water purification and more recently in the newlinetreatment of effluents The best known and most utilized processes in the field newlineof water and wastewater treatment are those utilizing pressure gradients as the newlineprocess driving force These processes include reverse osmosis newlinenanofiltration ultrafiltration and microfiltration These membrane systems newlinehave proved to offer superior treatment capabilities particularly in cases newlinewhere conventional methods could not perform the task as efficiently or newlineeffectively Pressure driven membrane processes may be viewed as newlinesophisticated filtration methods capable of separating fine particles molecules newlineand ions in solution Ultrafiltration is used industrially for the removal of newlinemacromolecules and colloids from wastewater and has been used extensively newlinein the food and dairy industries The degree and quantity of the separation are newlinea result of the pore size of the membrane and the molecular structure size newlineshape and flexibility of colloids and organic molecules Pore sizes ranging newlinefrom 0 001 0 01 and#956;m allow separation from solution of molecules with a newlinemolecular weight between 500 and 300 000 Daltons newline newline
