Abstract: | The main objective of the study was to analyse the role of mantras and breathing pattern and their combine effects in different training durations of suryanamaskar (SN) on selected psycho-physiological variables. For the purpose of the present investigation 90-95 students of age ranged between 13 to 15 years with mean scores and SD 14.2±1.22; were chosen at random from the representative sample of 150 students from class 7th, 8th and 9th from Ram Krishna Vidya Mandir, Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. They were further divided into four experimental groups of 20 students each, as Group one (1-Suryanamaskar with Mantra Chanting); Group-Two (2-Suryanamaskar with fixed Breathing Pattern); Group-Three (3-Suryanamaskar with Mantra chanting and Fixed Breathing Pattern); and Group-Four (4-Ordinary Suryanamaskar). The treatment was randomly allotted among groups. The training duration was five days in a week for a total of 12 weeks. The test items selected for the research were psychological and physiological variables. In psychological variables it was state and trait anxiety (STAI form Y-1 and Y-2; Spielberger, Gorsuch, Lushene, Vagg, and Jacobs, 1983), short-term memory (Richardson, 2007) and psychomotor performance through six letter cancellation test (Natu and Agarwal, 1997) and digit letter substitution test (Wechsler, 1955, 1981). In physiological variables it was resting heart rate, vital capacity, resting respiratory rate and peak flow rate. The final analysis was done for 48 samples that was twelve students from each group as there were a few who dropped out, a few did not complete the questionnaire, a few who had faked in their statement. newlineTo compare the effects of various suryanamaskar training and training duration on selected psycho-physiological variables 4 x 3 Mixed (Between-Within) factorial ANOVA was used as the statistical technique and the level of significance was set at 0.05. Partial Eta Square was also calculated to see the effect size of treatment. |
