Web based Technologies in Libraries in the Institutes of National Importance in India

Abstract

The Internet has become common across the world and has its impact on each and every sphere of human life. It has revolutionized the traditional libraries and improved the library services through innovative ways and methods to reach the library users and meet their information needs. Traditional library services, which were more user-centric and were offered within four walls of the libraries, have been transformed into web-based library and information services using web technologies. The internet also provides library and information centers the opportunity to adapt and implement more advanced changes. Library websites have been the most important point of access and deliver the web-based library and information services. Hence, it has been observingthat A library website is a virtual public face, the quasi-equivalent of the front door, signage, pathfinders, surrogates to the collections, services and it is used as a window to the world wide web (WWW) (Diaz, 1998). It also serves as an integrated interface to a wide variety of digital resources and web-based library services for users over a network (Letha, 2006). newlineThe internet also provided the library and information centres with an opportunity to adapt and implement more advanced changes with the ability to provide pinpointed, expeditious and exhaustive information services. Accordingly, library websites have been the most important point of access and deliver the web-based library and information services. The study has been an attempted to investigate the use of web technology perceived by library and information service community in libraries and library websites of the Institutes of National Importance in India.
