Abstract: ABSTRACT newlineFor a few decades, power quality did not create any problem, because it had no impact newlineon most of the loads associated with the electric distribution system. Nowadays, newlinedependability and quality of electric power is one of the important topics in power newlineindustry. There are several kinds of power quality problems and power issues which newlineoccur due to miscellaneous causes. Among the various power quality issues, two newlinepower quality issues have been recognized to be of main concern to the consumers newlinenamely voltage sag and harmonics. This thesis is focusing on voltage sag. Voltage newlinesags are large problems for a lot of industries, and it is most likely the most serious newlinepower quality problem today. Voltage sags is the most frequent type of power quality newlineissue in the distribution system. This thesis aims to examine various mitigation newlinetechniques that are appropriate for different types of voltage sag sources. The newlinesimulation of the test system is carried out using MATLAB software. In this work, newlineamong the various voltage mitigation techniques the one with Distribution Static newlineCompensator (DSTATCOM) is used for power quality improvement. In this thesis newlineenhancement in voltage sag by using hybrid Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO)- newlineFirefly (FF) algorithm optimized fuzzy controller is described. DSTATCOM is a newlineFlexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) device that is used in voltage sag newlineimprovement. The proposed hybrid optimization algorithm improves the performance newlineof the fuzzy controller so that it can effectively control the working of DSTATCOM. newlineIn our test system a DSTATCOM is positioned in a three phase system to regulate the newlinevoltage sag. A Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) is designed to control the output of the newlineDSTATCOM. The whole system is simulated using MATLAB Simulink software. newlineThe fuzzy controlled DSTATCOM output is evaluated and analysed using MATLAB newlineSimulink software. The system without DSTATCOM is also simulated using newlineMATLAB Simulink. The FLC rules are optimized using FF algorithm, PSO algorithm newlineand Hybrid Algorithm and
