Abstract: | Rice husk constitutes 20 of the 500 million tons of paddy newlineproduced in the world India one of the largest producers of sugarcane in the newlineworld produces 300 million tons per year Rice husk ash RHA and bagasse newlineash BA are used as pozzolanic materials for the development of blended newlinecements Very limited information is available on the permeability and newlinecorrosion resistance characteristics of RHA blended concrete Few studies newlinehave been reported on the use of bagasse ash as pozzolanic material in cement newlinepastes and no detailed study for strength and durability properties of BA newlineblended concrete has been made newlineThe objective of the present investigation is to evaluate the RHA newlineand BA as supplementary cementitious materials with reference to strength newlinechloride ion permeability and corrosion resistance properties in blended newlinecement concrete and to identify the optimal level of replacement of OPC with newlineRHA or BA Boiler fired rice husk and bagasse residues were collected from newlinethe mills The mill fired residues were further burnt at 650 C over a period of newlineone hour and pulverized before they were used as cement replacement newlinematerials Blended cements were prepared by replacing OPC with RHA or newlineBA 5 to 35 by weight of cement in dry condition Towards this objective newlineexperiments were carried out in three phases as per standard test procedures newlineIn the first phase chemical composition physical properties and newlinecharacterization of RHA and BA were carried out This included evaluation of newlinestandard consistency initial setting time final setting time and compressive newlinestrength of RHA and BA blended cements The strength and durability newlineproperties of RHA and BA blended cement mortars were also evaluated newlineIn the second phase studies on the blended concrete specimens newlinewere conducted RHA concrete mixes BA concrete mixes and a control mix newlinewere prepared with constant water to binder ratio of 053 for a design mix of newline114652995 for cube compressive strength of 25 MPa The tests newlineconducted include compressive strength splitting tensile strength bond newlinestrength water absorpti |
