The subject of drugs is as old as disease and they always go hand in hand. Drugs, especially pain relievers, have been around till the time human beings have sought relief from physical and mental pain. Illness has been man s heritage from the beginning of his existence and the search for remedies to combat it is perhaps equally old. The term drug is derived from the French word drogue , which means a dry herb. According to World Health Organization, it is intended to be used to modify or explore physiological states for the benefit of the recipient. newlineThe world s oldest known pharmacological or therapeutic writings come from India in the Rig-Veda and from China in their Materiamedica (2500-3000 BC). The beginning of synthetic medicinal chemistry was mostly made in Germany. The first synthetic organic chemicals to be used were probably ether and chloroform, as anesthetics, in the first half of the 19th century. As a result, most of the earlier efforts to find synthetic drugs were concentrated on anesthetics, hypnotics and then analgesics such as chloral hydrate, paraldehyde, sulphones and phenacetin. newline
