Abstract: The banking system acts as a back bone to a nation s economy and is indispensable for the smooth and efficient functioning of different activities of the society. Banks contribute to the economic development by accepting large amounts of public funds and leveraging such funds through credit creation with the object of securing profits for their shareholders. The structure of the banking industry affects its performance and efficiency, which in turn affects its ability to collect savings and channelize them into productive investment.
