Surface engineering is largely used in industries to improve the life newlineof engineering components such as bearings pistons and piston rings Besides newlinethe traditional diffusion treatment processes such as carburizing nitriding and newlineboriding many new surface modification processes have been developed newlineHowever there is no single coating which is good in all aspects A practical newlinesolution to achieve a combination of two or more required properties is newlineprovided by duplex treatment Engineering industries in general and newlineautomotive industries in particular are now aware of the role of such surface newlinemodifications to improve the surface characteristics which will ultimately newlineimprove the product performance Nitrided steels are extensively used in the newlineautomotive industry due to the excellent wear resistance of the nitrided layer newline and the superior fatigue life in comparison with other common surface treatments like electroplating or thermal spraying Only special alloy steels will exhibit the best nitrided newlinecharacteristics after being nitride This has led to the search for suitable low newlinecost materials that would still exhibit good nitrided characteristics newline newline
