Abstract: | From the top in the Electric Power Systems hierarchy it has to be newlinenoted that a well designed power station which works without any failure is newlinenot a source of any difficulties in supplying quality because the generated newlinesystem voltages are almost perfectly sinusoidal Therefore the term quality of newlinedelivery will be treated in this thesis as a matter of two issues related to newlinelimitations of the transmission systems as well as to Power Quality PQ newlineproblems of the distribution systems The objective of the present work is to obtain improvement in the quality of electrical energy delivery by using Flexible Alternating current Transmission Systems FACTS devices at the transmission level and Custom newlinePower Devices at the distribution level In the first half of the thesis newlinecomprehensive modeling of most popular FACTS devices namely Static Var newlineCompensator SVC Thyristor controlled Series Capacitor TCSC Static newlineSynchronous Compensator STATCOM and Unified Power Flow Controller newline UPFC for power flow studies are carried out The effectiveness of modeling newlineand convergence is tested with a five bus study system The Newton Raphson newlinemethod is used to solve the nonlinear power flow equation Also the work is newlineextended for IEEE 30 bus system The power flow studies stated above are newlineimplemented using MATLAB Due to steady increase in power demand newline maintaining power system stability becomes a difficult and very challenging problem The aim of this dissertation is also to examine the ability of FACTS devices namely newlineUnified Power Flow Controller to damp out the electromechanical oscillations newlinein a power system A dynamic model of UPFC is developed The control newlinestrategy is based on d q axis theory Two types of controllers are proposed newlinefor UPFC namely Genetic Algorithm GA based optimally tuned newlineProportional Integral PI and Single Input Fuzzy Logic Controller SFLC newlineUsing the above information transient stability studies were carried out on a newlineSingle Machine Infinite Bus SMIB The SFLC scheme provides good newlinedamping to the electromechanical oscillations in power system newline newline |
