Abstract: | Rice is the staple food for millions of people of developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. It also provides employment for over one billion, who either work directly in rice production or in related supported activities. The projected increase in global population to 9 billion by 2050, predicted over water scarcity, decrease in arable land, the constant battle against the new emerging nutrient deficiencies mostly zinc deficiency and possible adverse effects from climate change will present great challenges for rice breeders. Thus, now the plant breeding strategies should focus on the rapid attainment for new varieties with higher productivity using novel technologies. Biotechnology innovations provide several strategies for scientists to improve the efficiency of plant breeding processes to cope up with the future needs. newline |
