Compressed sensing enabled secured video codec in wireless multimedia sensor network

Abstract

Real time transmission of image and video in surveillance applications using Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSN) requires a high degree of processing and computing power. But there are some limitations in WMSN like memory constraint, low bandwidth and limited battery life. Since the multimedia data requires high bandwidth, there is a need for efficient compression, coding and security techniques. A technique called Compressed Sensing (CS) along with an efficient CODEC is used to address this issue and lower the sampling rate of signals.As the number of elderly person is increasing, home monitoring for healthcare applications is playing a vital role in our daily life. Hence this thesis focuses on an efficient CS based secured CODEC for transmission of video using WMSN especially for elderly monitoring. CS is widely used in image and video transmission since only few measurements are enough to transmit and can be received with suitable recovery algorithm. When CS measurements are further encoded more compression is achieved meeting the objective of WSN. Hence an efficient Compressed Sensing based Prediction Measurement (CSPM) encoder is proposed which is compatible for WMSN. CSPM encoding focuses on a significant reduction in data storage and saving in transmission energy. The compression performance of CSPM method is evaluated using metrics such as compression ratio and bit rate. The video is reconstructed by the orthogonal newlinematching pursuit algorithm. newline
