Abstract: The present thesis entitled A Study of Socio-Cultural Elements in newlineSelect Fiction of U. R. Ananthamurthy is an attempt to study the social and newlinecultural elements with reference to the contemporary society of the novelist. newlineIndian society is inhibited by so many ideologies and beliefs which are newlinefollowed blindly and open heartedly. We are not coming out of these beliefs for newlineages together without knowing their significance in the daily practice. There newlineare so many literarians who tried to portray the issues like caste system, man newlinewoman relationship, and many more things. The people like R. K. Narayan, newlineRaja Rao, Khushwant Singh portrayed their society and experiences, etc. newlineThe present thesis aims to study the novels of U. R. Ananthamurthy in newlinethe perspective of socio-cultural elements. He has been a prolific, versatile and newlinebilingual writer. He was a poet, novelist, short story writer, critic and an newlineessayist. His notable select novels are Samskara, Bhartipura, Bhava and newlineAwasthe. He portrayed the contemporary problems, the social and cultural newlineissues. The study comprises the analytical, interpretative and critical study of newlinethe novels with the help of primary, secondary sources as well as print and newlineelectronic media. The elements found are like caste system, class system, newlinereligion, mysticism, customs and traditions, rites and rituals, myths, newlinesuperstitions, politics, language, attire, sensuality, extra-marital affairs, greed newlineand mystery. The novels are based on the Indian social life covering Hindu newlineideology and philosophy. It is also critical survey of human phenomenon of newlineIndian life and society. The point to analysis makes it easy, compatible to newlinecontemplate the intention, objective behind the criticism of Indian society. newlineThe settings of the novels is Brahmin Agrahara, the untouchable huts newlineand the European atmosphere.
