Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) is the most serious form of Leishmaniasis and is still a major public health problem in the Indian subcontinent. Most insights about host immune responses during Leishmaniasis have been gained via experimental models. There remains an urgent need to address immunemechanisms underlying defective immune responses in VL. A better understanding of anti-parasitic host immune responses that control infection from those that cause disease will be helpful in developing vaccines, effective diagnostic tools, therapies and other control measures for long term treatment and prevention of this disease. newline
