dc.description.abstract | Phnom Penh was a city being reborn after decades of civil war and newlinepolitical strife. For the city s poor, the renaissance of slums which flows newlinefrom the provinces provided opportunities for their living. On the one hand, newlinethe economic boom during the first decade of the century offered greater newlineprospects for eking out a living somewhere in the city s growing informal newlineeconomy. But at the same time Phnom Penh s rapid growth was turning the newlinecity into a sharply contested space. Nowhere was this contest more newlinedramatic than in the land and housing markets, commercial developers newlinewere steadily privatizing all available city space and forcing out newlineeconomically weaker market actors, by any means possible. The result was newlinedispossession of the legal rights of slum dwellers and a structural deficit of newlinelow-income housing and living space in Phnom Penh. newline | |
