Rapid industrialization and urbanization of Chennai city in India newlinehas resulted in rapid increase of solid wastes Unscientific way of dumping newlinethe solid wastes is threatening the groundwater surrounding municipal solid newlinewaste disposal sites newlinePerungudi dumping yard in Chennai is one of the two designated newlineunengineered landfills currently being used for the disposal of municipal solid newlinewaste from the Chennai city It covers an area of 58ha and is in operation newlinesince 1987 The average quantity of waste that is disposed on to the yard daily newlineis 2450 tons Under the existing solid waste management and dumping newlinepractices it is seen that there is a large possibility of ground water newlinecontamination because of the potential pollution source of leachate newlineoriginating from the landfill site newline newline
