Abstract: Many manmade applications like ELISA liposomal drug delivery newlinevaccine biosensor biosorbents and biocatalyst require proteins to perform newlinetheir functions in the solidliquid interface while anchored to solid surfaces newlineAnchoring hydrophilic proteins to hydrophobic surfaces is a major challenge newlineeven for biological systems Bacteria have overcome this challenge by newlineevolving lipoproteins to perform a variety of functions at membraneaqueous newlineinterface while one end of hydrophilic protein is anchored to its membrane by newlinea lipid moiety NacylSdiacylglyceryl cysteine the rest of the protein is in newlinethe aqueous phase functioning normally However bacterial lipid modification newlinemechanism remains unexploited for manmade applications Based on the newlinecurrent understanding of this ubiquitous and unique bacterial lipid newlinemodification it is possible to use Ecoli the popular recombinant proteinexpression newlinehost for converting a protein to a lipoprotein with the newlinecharacteristic hydrophobic anchor at the Nterminal end newline newline
