Abstract: | The rapid growth of mobile communications and internet has newlinemotivated the research in image transmission through wireless channels The newlinetransmission of images through unreliable channels is a challenging task that newlinerequires robust source and channel coding The coding technique must adapt newlineitself to varying channel conditions and the quality must degrade gracefully as newlinethe channel conditions worsen The progressive compression algorithms have newlinegained importance in recent years due to scalable reconstructions from the newlineembedded bit stream The progressive source coding algorithms with unequal newlineerror protection are found to be suitable for real time applications especially newlinefor packet based transmission at high data rates required for the third and newlinefourth generation wireless standards The transform based techniques have newlinebecome very popular in image compression due to their simplicity good newlineenergy compaction and fast computations The efficiency depends on the newlinetransform and the encoding algorithm In this thesis the performance of newlinetransform based progressive image compression algorithms is investigated newlineThe discrete cosine transform DCT discrete wavelet transform DWT and newlinethree non linear transforms based on contourlets bandelets and ridgelets is newlineinvestigated The existing compression algorithms are modified to suit the newlineproperties and data structure for each of the transforms newline |
