Wireless sensor networks WSN consist of groups of sensor nodes newlinewith wireless links to perform constant monitoring of an event in an newlineenvironment Sensor nodes are mostly equipped with non rechargeable newlinebatteries that have limited lifetime Since a sensor network is expected to last newlineseveral months to one year without recharging minimizing energy consumed newlineby communication to extend the network lifetime is an important design newlineobjective To achieve this objective one common approach is to schedule the newlinesensor nodes sleep cycles Sensor nodes are in idle state for most of the time newlineas events occur infrequently It would be a significant waste of energy if the newlineradios of the nodes are always kept on since the radio is a major energy newlineconsumer So the radios are switched off when a node is not required to act newlineeither as a source or a relay in multihop routing Conventional sleep newlinescheduling protocols for sensor networks save energy but they lead to a large newlineincrease in endtoend latency newline newlineen_US
