Abstract

The present thesis, The Disruption of Family: A Study in Khaled newlineHosseini s Novels and its Representation in Film, has taken the aspects of newlineAfghan life focusing mainly on the basic edifice of a society-family. Having newlineworked with women and children in India due to my work at Family Planning newlineAssociation of India and also having been closely connected with the literary newlineworld, I felt the need to investigate the disintegration of life in and after war time newlinein Afghanistan which has been a victim of genocide in many ways due to myriad newlinereasons. The elements that get listed in the present thesis look so ghastly because newlinethe life may come to such condition anywhere in the world wherever ruthless newlinepower of destructive weapons starts to rule. Throughout the history of the world newlinemankind has seen many war conditions and how the human life suffered due to newlinesuch horrible conditions. However mankind has not learnt its lessons that no life newlinecan be sustained due to war. All that happens during and after the war is just the newlinedegradation of human dignity. newlineThe present thesis has taken up the works of Khaled Hosseini wherein he has newlinedominantly projected the disruption of the family as the members of the family get newlinethrown away owing to the problems created by war. Khaled Hosseini in his novels newlineThe Kite Runner, A Thousand Splendid Suns and And the Mountains Echoed show newlinelife in its various hues and colours. newlineKhaled Hosseini, a doctor by profession, had penchant for writing right from newlinehis young age. Nevertheless he took to writing only when he saw a news report newlineabout Afghanistan where kite flying was banned. He wrote a short story by the newlinename The Kite Runner. On a later date he wrote it to be a full-fledged novel. He newlinewas encountered with the necessity of writing this novel due to the polarization of newlineviii newlinethe world after the attack on World Trade Center in New York on 9th November newline2001.
