Abstract: | The twentieth century witnessed an emergence of a number of newlinecritical theories and approaches to the literary studies. The criticism has newlinealways been in a constant flux. Right from the Russian formalistic school, newlinehaving its head quarter at Moscow and then at St. Petesburg, to the newlineAmerican New Criticism, French structuralism, Poststructuralism to newlineFeminism, German Marxism, Historicism, New Historicism, Cultural newlineMaterialism, and Postcolonial theory the critical analysis and newlineinterpretation of literature has been shifting. Some of the theories, newlinefocused on the linguistic aspects of the literature whereas some focused newlineon the organic unity, comprising tension, irony, paradox, ambiguity, newlinepopularly known as an Ultra Close reading of a text. The theories like newlinestructuralism concentrated on the larger structure of a specific genre of newlineliterature while Poststructuralism undermined the Structuralist focal point newlineof analysis. newlineThe poststructuralist theory basically rejected an idea of a center newlineand came up with the concept of decentralization and deconstructive newlineperspective. The postcolonial theory rejected the concept of universality newlineproposed and practiced rigorously by the earlier theories of language and newlineliterature. Historicism and cultural materialism concentrated on the newlinehistorical and cultural foregrounding respectively, eschewing all the other newlinefactors responsible for the production of a literary text. The feminist newlinecritics strongly opposed the analysis, interpretation, and writings showing newlinewomen, demonic, stereotype, and witness subordinate to men. newlineAll the earlier theories and approaches to the literary studies kept newlineon shifting focus to author, text and sometimes to the reader. No earlier newlinetheory focused on the environmental perspective of the literary artifacts. newlineiii newlineThe role of the environmental world was never paid attention.
