Abstract: | Nonlinear optical properties of organic materials are being newlineexploited in an ever growing number of applications in several fields of newlinescience and technology The extensive use of continuous wave cw lasers for newlinevarious applications with power levels ranging from and#956;W to kW has stimulated newlinea need to protect the human eyes and optical systems from debilitating laser newlineeffects This can be achieved when the intensity of the incoming laser light is newlineopportunely reduced newlineIn order to find the suitability of a material for such applications newlineone needs to find its optical characteristics such as type of nonlinearity its newlinemagnitude spectrum response time etc Since an important step towards newlineoptimizing the nonlinear optical behavior in a molecular material is the design newlineof the appropriate molecular structures that exhibit enhanced molecular non newlinelinearity a great deal of effort has to placed on the measurements of the newlinenonlinear coefficients of a series of compounds that show a systematic newlinevariation of molecular structures Such a study would prove extremely useful newlinein establishing a relation between a specific chemical structure and its newlinenonlinear response a knowledge that can be applied for the design and newlinepreparation of highly nonlinear optical materials A distinct class of organic newlinematerials is the conjugated structures that involve alternate single and double newlinebonds newline newline |
