Abstract: | Jawar (Sorghum vulgare L. family Poaceae) is mostly grown in 92 countries of the world, covering an area of approximately 39.66 million hectares with grain production of 6.9 million tonnes. Sorghum primarily produced in India (7.67 million ha) constitutes about 19 % share in global areas followed by Sudan 6.66 million ha (17 %), Nigeria 4.74 million ha (12 %), Niger 2.55 million ha (6 %), USA 2.23 million ha (6 %), Mexico and Ethiopia 1.6 million ha (4 %), each respectively during 2009-2010 (FAOSTAT, 2009). Sorghum is grown in almost all states of India. Major Sorghum growing states are Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra (Bandyopadhyay et. al., 2002 and Navi et. al., 2002). Within Maharashtra, Sorghum is cultivated over an area of Solapur occupies 4014.1 hectares and an annual production of about 2106.9 tonnes (Economic Survey of Maharashtra, GOM. P.T. 20), occupied more than 51 % of total cultivated area. Sorghum based production system is provides the income and employment for the population, therefore Sorghum is not only a staple food of the region but also a way of life newline |
