Abstract: | In wireless ad-hoc networks the nodes/terminals may be placed in remote area and with no fixed infrastructure. Wireless nodes have limited energy resources which act as a key factor to estimate the node lifetime. Most research is based on the power aware schemes, which takes advantage of remaining energy of wireless nodes. Existing schemes estimate remaining energy by subtracting total energy consumed from initial energy leading to erroneous estimations that result in early power exhaustion of nodes that affects real world deployment, because the residual energy in real batteries is also affected by temperature, charge cycle, aging, self discharge and various other factors. Lifetime estimation model apprehend the battery characteristics that can be used to investigate their performance under varying operational conditions more precisely. In this work a lifetime estimation model is proposed, it takes into account the varying environmental temperature and ageing that effects battery performance. An experimental approach is proposed to determine actual capacity of ad-hoc node under varying temperature. A theoretical analysis and a mathematical model are developed to study the effect of changing environmental temperature and battery ageing. Experiments have been conducted in order to investigate the impact of varying temperature on battery lifetime. The proposed model output is compared with the existing model and significant improvement has been observed in lifetime of a node which effects the routing decision at run time. newline |
