Abstract: | Today, with the invention of medical imaging techniques, the journey inside the human body is done by the clinicians without adopting invasive procedures. The survey shows that the demands and innovations of imaging technology are keep on increasing. In an interview, Professor Olav Jansen, Director, the institute of Neuroradiology, Schleswig-Holstein, Kiel said that new molecular imaging methods depicting not only organs morphology but also their functions will be invented by 2020. Thus there is a substantial growth of medical imaging technologies and subsequently the volume of medical images in healthcare sector also increases to a greater extent. Retrieval of medical images from such a large repository as and when required becomes a critical task. Many research works in text based image retrieval and content based image retrieval methods are evolved to address this issue. Content based image retrieval considers the visual aspects newlineof an image such as color, shape and texture. To retrieve medical images based on its visual aspects, the modality of a medical image is consideredas one of the best filter to limit the search space.
