Rapid growth in wireless networks increases the demand for newlineservices that are traditionally available only in wired networks In wireless newlinenetworks Communication takes place over a time varying and unreliable newlinechannel So transmission of data over unreliable networks has been an active newlinefield of research The users are in need of best Quality of Services QoS newlinewithin the available bandwidth Depending on the type of data QoS newlineparameters will vary Voice data is constrained by delay parameter whereas newlinevideo is constrained by loss and distortion factors newlineMost network designs do not provide mechanisms for protocol newlinelayers to optimally adapt to underlying channel conditions and specific newlineapplication requirements While protocol layering is an important abstraction newlinethat reduces network design completely it is not well suited to wireless newlinenetworks since the nature of the wireless medium makes it difficult to newlinedecouple the layers Though Shannon s source and channel coding theorems newlinework well they would not fulfill the current challenging network conditions newlineMoreover meeting the end to end performance requirements of newlinedemanding applications is extremely challenging without interaction between newlineprotocol layers In video streaming high bandwidth requirements are tightly newlinecoupled with delay constraints as packets need to be delivered in a timely newlinefashion to guarantee continuous play out When packets are lost or arrived newlinelate the picture quality suffers as decoding errors tend to propagate to newlinesubsequent portions of the video newlineen_US
