Abstract: | Composite mainly consists of a matrix material reinforced for anypreferred property by suitable reinforcement. Obviously, the reinforcement isof superior characteristics, used in the form of particles, fibers and whiskers.Composites are potential materials due to their properties such as stiffness andhigh specific strength which lead to potential application in the area ofaerospace, marine and automobile engineering etc. Although these materialshave attractive properties, during the processing and service, the compositematerials can have some sort of defects like matrix cracking, fiber breakage, newlinefiber pull out, delamination and debonding. Composite materials are classifiedas polymeric, metal matrix and ceramic matrix reinforced materials.Composites are composed of two phases, namely matrix andreinforcement. PMCs have a matrix which is made of a thermoset or athermoplastic polymeric resin. The most common types of reinforcement usedfor PMC are strong and brittle fibers incorporated into a soft and ductilepolymeric matrix. Hence, PMCs are generally referred to as Fiber Reinforced newlinePlastics (FRP). FRP composites have been steadily replacing metals as choiceof engineering materials for various applications, because of their very highspecific strength and stiffness. Among all the FRP s, Carbon Fiber ReinforcedPlastic (CFRP) is much sought after material because of its light weight, veryhigh strength newline |
