Studies on production of bioethanol and its characterization blending with additives for effective use in diesel engine as diesel bioethanol blends

Abstract

Ever increasing consumption of fossil fuel and petroleum products have been a matter of great concern for India The huge outgo of foreign exchange on one hand and increase in the price of crude oil on the other hand has greatly affected the development of India This has led to the increase in inflation rate of the country Apart from this global warming climatic change energy security pollution related health hazards depletion of fossil fuel and problem related to transport and distribution of non renewable fuels have propelled the search for an alternative energy and related technologies to the forefront of national agenda The consumption of diesel fuel is six times higher than that of the gasoline in India and a few percentage of substitution for diesel fuel will save a considerable amount of foreign exchange India has vast potential for producing liquid biofuels such as bioethanol biodiesel etc In this present work bioethanol was produced from sugar molasses and also the optimum condition for maximum concentration of bioethanol was determined by using response surface methodology Methyl ester of cottonseed oil and ethyl ester of pongamia oil were produced from cottonseed oil and pongamia oil respectively through transesterification method newline
