Abstract

The present study is an analysis of the Co-operative Principle (CP) in Harold Pinter s select plays i.e. The Birthday Party (1957), The Room (1957), The Dumb Waiter (1957) and The Caretaker (1959). Harold Pinter is one of the exponents of The Theatre of Absurd. His plays are distinguished from all others by their sense of mystification, suspense and ambiguity. This analysis is considered as one of the most authentic ways of interpreting discourse, particularly the discourse that occurs in Pinter s Plays. In-depth analysis of CP is a kind of exploration of the overall context of the Plays. The factors like words and utterances, interpretation of conversation for a deeper study into the pragmatic unsaid , the whatness lying at the bottom of every discussion. Offering a personal interpretation to Pinteresque drama, exploration of these and many other contextual factors is an interesting as well as highly revealing exercise. Moreover, this exercise helps the reader to put the characters, events, themes and other issues related to the dramas in a proper perspective. The plays can be best understood if the utterances embedded in its structural design are properly interpreted.
