Abstract: | Conventional synthetic packaging film materials derived from petroleum based products have evolved into a major environmental concern today. In addition, about Rs. 13,300 crore worth fruits and vegetables goes waste every year, according to the report published by Central institute of Post-harvest Technology and Engineering (CIPHET) (Committee on Agriculture, Ministry of Food Processing Industries, 4th Report, Lok Sabha Secretariat). According to a recent report in our country around 35% wastage of fruits and vegetables leads to a revenue loss of Rs. 500 billion. Also, 80% of vegetables rot due to high water content and lack of processing facilities leading to a loss of revenue of Its. 125 billion (www.nuffoodsspectrum.in/inner_viewsingle_details_print.php?page=1andcontent_type=andvrtcl_panel_nan=andele_id=N OR_56ea4f6d43d534.03730344). Novel natural polymer materials obtained from renewable and biodegradable sources are economical and have been explored to replace the conventional packaging materials, reduce environmental pollution and protect fresh fruits and vegetables against post-harvest wastage. Edible films and coatings are an example of biodegradable and biocompatible packaging films derived from renewable sources that can provide additional protection for food at low cost. Primarily, it is obtained from polysaccharides, proteins and lipids. Additionally, edible coatings can be incorporated with various antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant and other bioactive substances which can serve to enhance its beneficial effects. Throughout the world, edible coatings and films have been extensively applied in fresh produce, fish, meat and its products, poultry products, dairy products and many other food items to retain their quality and extend their shelf life. Based on these ideas, the aim of this research study is to develop natural polymer based edible coating to prolong the shelf life of fresh fruits and vegetables. |
