Turning is a process using a single point tool that removes newlineunwanted material to produce a surface of revolution. Turning newlineoperations are evaluated based on the performance characteristics newlinesuch as cutting forces, surface roughness, tool wear and tool life. newlineThese performance characteristics are correlated with cutting newlineparameters such as cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut. To newlineoperate machines efficiently and to obtain the required payback, newlinethere is a need to select suitable cutting parameters. newlineIt has been found that wide varities of both uncoated and coated newlinecarbide cutting tool inserts are used in the machining of steels in newlinethe manufacturing industries. newlineFrom the literature survey it appears that lesser systematic newlineresearch work has been carried out on various aspects of turning newlineprocess such as force analysis, wear studies, tool tip temperature newlineanalysis etc., especially with the combination of medium carbon newlinesteel confirming to EN-19 specification as work material using both newlineuncoated and coated carbide cutting tool. newlineTherefore, in the present investigation it has been proposed to carry newlineout systematically experiments with an objective of understanding newlinethe machining process on medium carbon steel confirming to EN-19 newlinespecification as work material using both uncoated and coated newlinecarbide cutting tool inserts. More specifically for every combination of cutting tool insert and newlinework piece material selected, it has been proposed - (i) Analyze newlineforces acting on tool inserts during turning operation. (ii) study newlinesurface roughness of work material after turning operation. newline(iii) Optimize cutting conditions during turning operation by design newlineof experiment approach.
