Awareness use and effectiveness of electronic information resources and services in technical information centers of DRDO laboratories in India a study

Abstract

The special libraries and information centres play an important role in newlineproviding information for supporting research and development especially in newlineindustries and research laboratories. The advent of electronic resources have newlineincreasingly being used now in these laboratories as they provide unrestricted access newlineto information in different forms and formats They also provide the varieties of newlineservices to specialists and help librarians and libraries to finding and organizing newlineinformation and at interpreting information needs of scientific community. In recent newlineyears, libraries and especially special libraries are understood to have extending the newlineinformation sources and services to users beyond the four walls as information newlinesources are made accessible by electronic means, and by providing the assistance of newlinelibrarians in navigating and analyzing tremendous amounts of knowledge with a newlinevariety ICT tools. In this background use of electronic resources and services by newlineresearch and development (RandD) community would be an appropriate investigation newlineand this research has aimed at this objective in this study. newlineThe main focus of the present research was to examine the recognition of eresources and services by Scientists of DRDO laboratories in India, and determine newlineawareness, usage, availability, knowledge, importance, effectiveness, satisfaction of newlineusers and barriers faced in the access to e-resources. The present study is confined to newline25 DRDO laboratories spread in different parts of the country and aims to discussing newlineand identifying the present situation of the TICs/libraries attached to the said DRDO newlineLaboratories. The study suggests ways and means of improving the library systems in newlineconnection with retrieving, accessing and dissemination of e-information to support newlinethe research and development activities in the electronic era.
