Abstract: | Biomedical implant materials such as titanium alloys which are newlineused inside the human body generally fail due to the occurrence of significant newlinelocalized corrosion by interactions with corrosive body fluids Studies on newlineimplant materials used currently for orthopaedic applications have revealed newlinelack of sufficient bonding with the surrounding body tissues which has led to newlinethe investigation of novel material formulations Implants also undergo newlineloosening and detachment from the bone due to poor biocompatibility of the newlineimplant material In view of the high elastic modulus as compared to that of newlinebone high strength to weight ratio and corrosion resistance Ti 6Al 4V alloy newlineis commonly used for implant applications It is regarded as highly passive newlineand the passive films formed on titanium and its alloys are non reactive but newlinethe passive state is not entirely stable and under certain circumstances the newlinelocalized breakdown of harmful ions on a highly microscopic scale has been newlinefound to occur These deficiencies in applications have demanded the surface newlinemodification of the material, which would enhance corrosion and wear newlineresistance without altering the mechanical properties newline newline |
