dc.description.abstractOver the years the world cities has been challenged with pressure for newlinedevelopment due to increasing population, economic aspirations and newlinetechnological advancements. This scenario is seriously experienced in the newlineurban areas of developing countries in Asia due to rapid urbanisation leads to newlineimproper exploitation of natural resources. Land being one of the prime newlinephysical components is a precious, irreversible resource used intensively has newlineled to haphazard developments. This degradation process paved way for newlinenumerous urban problems in the cores area of the city. The remedy for newlinereduction of urban problems is development of underground space usage in newlinethe core areas. Thus, the main aim of the research is to affirm the significant newlineusage of underground space in the core areas of the city and to select suitable newlinesites for underground development. newlineChennai city is in the infant stage for the implementation of newlineunderground space usage, due to lesser understanding on its benefits and newlineimpediments and no guidelines for implementation. Thus the research newlineenunciates the various benefits based on location, layout, isolation, newlinepreservation, economics and social aspects for underground space usage. newlineFurther the impediments like public receptivity, safety and legal issues are newlinediscussed and various mitigation methods for alleviating the problems are newlineemphasised. newline newline
