dc.description.abstractnewline Satellite networks being long distance coverage networks, are deployed above the earth to support many application services like earth observation, communication, disaster management and navigation. Among these types of applications, communication satellite systems play a major role in extending the network connectivity to provide the world wide coverage, and wider bandwidth with lower overhead and less cost in network setup of access network. Tele-medicine, Tele-education, Internet access and personal communication are the commonly known examples of communication satellite applications. These applications were expected to perform as in the wired network while they are proposed for usage. Although the users were benefited by their extended connectivity, a significant performance deviation than the wired network was observed at the user and network level. This has opened many research directions like protocol optimization, hardware optimization, and optimization in channel allocations. newlineMost of the internet applications were designed either using TCP or UDP at transport level. Developers preferred TCP for its reliability and UDP for its simplicity. Moreover, these applications were designed in the wired network era. That means, characteristics of the wired network had influenced the design assumptions of the protocol. High congestion and low error rate are the design assumptions of TCP and UDP newline
