Abstract: | In the electric power systems the three-phase four-wire power distribution system is an important intermediate which is employed to distribute the power to the end user from the utility grid. Due to increasing of sensitive loads such as medical equipment, computer based automation and modern communication devices are to be interconnected into the power distribution system. As these sensitive devices and equipment have to operate day in day out and it extremely reliable input power supply and uninterrupted voltage is mandatory. The supply of distorted and unreliable power supply to these sensitive equipments leads to maloperation and higher losses to the end users. The growth of power electronic loads such as Switched Mode Power Supply (SMPS) and Adjustable Speed Drives (ASDs) are drawing a nonsinusoidal current from the distribution system which result in degrading of power quality by means of voltage and current distortions. This thesis mainly focuses on compensation against voltage and current distortions, because of unavoidable circumstances where the connection of non-linear loads in the power distribution is prevalent. The series Active Power Filter (APF) is one of the key Custom Power Devices (CPDs) for compensating voltage based disturbances in the electric power distribution system. The series APF comprises of Voltage Source Inverter (VSI), Direct Current (DC) link capacitor and injection transformer. newline |
