Abstract: The future electrical system must be able to meet demand for electricity in a way that also satisfies environmental concerns as well as security concerns. But today, existing grids are under pressure to deliver the growing demand for power, high stability and sustainable electric supply. Therefore, modernization of the current electric grid is imperative to the national/international efforts to increase energy efficiency, transition to renewable sources of energy, reduce green house gas emissions and build a sustainable economy that ensures prosperity for current and future generations. These complex challenges are driving the evolution of smart grid technologies. The distributed integration of non conventional energy sources such newlineas wind energy, solar energy etc. and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles to a smart grid further adds complexity and challenges to its modeling, control and optimization. Therefore, innovative technologies are needed to handle the growing complexity of the smart grid in order to get stochastic bidirectional optimal power flow, maximizing the renewable energy penetration, and to provide maximum utilization of available energy storage. The growing interest on smart grid and its multidisciplinary nature motivate the need for solutions from different fields of knowledge. Because of complexity and heterogeneity of the smart grid, artificial intelligence techniques and computational intelligence appear to be some of the enabling technologies for its future development and success. newline newline
