Abstract: | newlineIn diffusion bonding, two neat metal surfaces are brought together into contact at increased temperatures under stress for a particular period of time. During that time atoms diffuse between the two metals across the interface. The energy that is required for the movement of atoms entirely dependable on the applied stress and temperature. This specified bonding is done for joining alloys and metals together of similar and dissimilar material combinations. This is also extensible to non-metals, ceramics and intermetallics (IMC s). The traditional fusion welding processes have limitations like the production of weak heat affected zone, distortion of the base metals etc. These demerits have been overcome in diffusion bonding process. One important merit of diffusion bonding is that the unique features of the base materials are retained after bonding. Temperature that is required for the diffusion bonding is in the range between 0.5 to 0.8 times the melting point of the lower melting point metal. Stress is typically a small fraction of yield strength to avoid macro plastic deformation while the time period can vary from a few seconds to several hours. newline newline |
