Abstract: Over the past decades, study of nonlinear optical properties of materials has been one of the major research topics in the field of Nonlinear Optics (NLO). Nonlinear optical materials are used for various optoelectronics applications such as optical switching, optical computing, optical data storage devices, optical phase conjugation and optical limiting, etc. Optical Limiting (OL) is one such important application in which the transmittance of laser beam through the materials decreases with increase in input intensity. Optical limiting materials are used to protect the human eyes newlineand optical sensors from high intense laser beam. Organic dyes are one such important class of optical materials which exhibit large third-order nonlinear susceptibility, fast response time and thermal stability, etc. Several experimental techniques are being adopted by the researchers in order to investigate the third-order Nonlinear Optical (NLO) properties of materials. The single beam Zand#1051589;scan technique is a commonly used and sensitive tool for measuring the third-order nonlinear optical newlineproperties of wide variety of materials. This technique separately measures both the nonlinear index and absorption changes of materials and has widely been accepted for the characterization of nonlinear optical materials. This thesis presents the third-order nonlinear optical properties and optical limiting behavior for a list of five anthraquinone dyes using the single beam Zand#1051589;scan technique. The contents of the thesis are divided in to five chapters and are outlined as given below. newline newline
