Abstract: | Introduction: Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of risk factors, including abdominal obesity, glucose intolerance, dyslipidemia and hypertension. The components of metabolic syndrome (MS) have been investigated for more than nine decades. The MS is defined by different criteria by different organizations. Most recently, Asia Pacific guideline of modified national cholesterol education programme: adult treatment panel III (modified NCEP: ATP-III) has been given most acceptable definition of MS for south Asian Indian researchers. newlinePrevalence of MS in rural areas of India has not been investigated adequately. No report could be found on renal dysfunction in MS in rural areas of India. Therefore, the present investigation was conducted to find out: (i) the relative prevalence of different components of MS in individual patients and (ii) the presence of renal dysfunction in patients having MS. newlineResearch question: What is the prevalence of renal dysfunction in patients with metabolic syndrome in rural population? newlineStudy area and population: The study was conducted among the rural patients. Rural area is defined as the area beyond the Municipal Corporation or Municipal Committee comes under the Gram Panchyat. Both male and female adult patients with metabolic syndrome belongs to rural area was our study population. newlineResearch Centre: Department of Biochemistry, National Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) supper specialty hospital, Jaipur (Raj) newlineInclusion Criteria: newlineand#61623; Adult patients suffering from metabolic syndrome of all age groups. newlineand#61623; Patients residing in rural area and who have given consent. newlineExclusion Criteria: newlineand#61623; Patients with less than three measures out of five will be excluded from the study. newlineand#61623; Refused to participate or has not given consent. newlineii newlineand#61623; Dyslipidemia due to reasons other than Metabolic Syndrome e.g. Hypothyroidism, Nephrotic Syndrome, Severe liver disorders. newlineand#61623; Pregnant women. newlineand#61623; Any other known disease e.g. TB, HIV, any malignancy. newlineSample Size: Cases-279, Controls-50.
