The optical properties of bimetallic nanoparticles depend on the size, shape, newlinecomposition, surrounding dielectric medium, separation between particles etc., which newlinecan be attributed to the phenomenon of surface plasmon resonance (SPR). Bimetallic newlinenanoparticles like Au-Ag, Au-Pd, Ag-Pd, Cu-Ag, Cu-Au etc. have been synthesized newlineusing simultaneous reduction or successive reduction of two metal ions in the newlinepresence of suitable reducing agents for applications in the fields like catalysis, newlinesensors, optics, electronics etc. Transmetallation reaction is one of the techniques used newlinefor the deposition of thin shell of Au or other noble metals using Cu/Co/Ag newlinenanoparticles as sacrificial templates to synthesize porous noble metal nanostructures. newlineThe thesis deals with the synthesis and characterization of Ag-Au and Ag-Pd newlinenanoparticles prepared via controlled transmetallation reaction using chicken egg newlinemembrane. Attempts have been made to understand the applications of Ag-Au/porous newlineAu nanoparticles in imaging yeast, live and dead lymphocytes and as catalyst in the newlinehydrogenation reaction of 4-nitrophenol. Attempts are made to understand the newlinecatalytic activity offered by the Ag-Pd nanoparticles too. newline
