Database design is a challenging and complex task due to its importance in the overall performance of the database system Recently various techniques have been under use across different stages of database application modeling design and implementation and they have been under continuous study and improvements by various researchers However the existing techniques are not providing effective guidelines for optimal database design Hence this research work proposes new improvements to the existing design techniques in three specific phases namely logical data modeling logical database design and programming in the database environment Data modeling is necessary to define and analyze data requirements needed to develop real world applications for an organization It involves the conceptual representation which is very powerful in expressing the business requirements The most common and popularly used conceptual data model for relational databases is the Entity Relationship model If the ER model is modeled carefully taking the business rules into consideration and then transformed to relations the resultant relations will be normalized However in most of the scenarios database designers derive relations directly from the requirements without developing ER models which result in poor database designen_US
