newlineDudek s life and works are keenly integrated with each other and together they unfold his creative newlineprocess. Each changing phase of his life influenced his creativity. Louis Dudek - the man and the poet are newlineactually one. Louis Dudek was second generation Canadian. He was born in Montreal on February 6, newline1918 and died in Montreal, Quebec on March 23, 2001. He was lean and sickly as a child, a tall skinny newlineboy. This made him introverted and hypersensitive from the start. As a child he never had much solid newlineconfidence in himself as he often heard from adults of his family that he would not live long. This flawed newlinehis unthinking confidence in life from the very beginning. Whatever he did in his later years was partly to newlineprove that he was not altogether a loss, not entirely a disappointment. newlineHe had the most unhappy childhood imaginable. His mother died when he was eight, but the loss newlineof the mother was not the only cause. He was often taken to hospital to find out whether he was about to newlinedie from some or other kind of disease. Before sending him to college, his father insisted him to undergo a newlinesurgery-he had the operation done-like a necessary castration or initiation rite-after which his real life newlinebegan. newline
