Abstract: ABSTRACT newlineOver the past few years, the prolific use of static power converters and newlinenonlinear loads has indiscriminately increased voltage and current distortions in newlinepower distribution systems. These distortions, which are caused by harmonics, are newlineone of the major power quality concerns in the electric power industry. Considerable newlineefforts have been made in recent years to improve the management of harmonic newlinedistortions in power distribution systems. The switching actions of these static power newlineconverters result in distorted input currents, which contain a fundamental and some newlineother higher order harmonics. They behave as current sources, injecting harmonic newlinecurrents into the supply network. This constitutes the problems of power system newlineharmonics. One of the problems of power system harmonics is the supply voltage newlinedistortion at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC). When a static power converter newlineinjects a distorted current into the supply network, a harmonic voltage is developed newlineacross the source impedance. The voltage at the PCC (415V), being the difference newlinebetween the source voltage and the voltage across the source impedance, is distorted. newlineIn this thesis, the applications of Matrix converter as shunt active filter, series newlineactive filter and Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) are proposed. This newlineresearch includes building up of conventional shunt active filter and series active newlinefilter. Also UPQC from VSC based converter is presented. newlineThe design concept of the shunt active filter is used to build matrix converter newlinebased shunt active filter. The simulation results are used to show that the newlinecompensation of the shunt active filter is enhanced with the use of the matrix newlineconverter. newlineThe research is done progressively such that compensating capabilities of the newlineseries active filter are enhanced progressively with matrix converter instead of VSC newlinebased converters. newlineSimilarly, the research on UPQC is also carried out progressively by building newlineup the matrix converter instead of VSC based converter. Each progress in the newlineii newlineresearch
