Abstract: newline newlineWater is essential for life We need water for every activity in life newlineMillions of people worldwide suffer from serious diseases because they do newlinenot have access to clean drinking water It is impossible to imagine our lives newlinewithout an adequate water supply According to national water policy newlineadequate drinking water facility should be provided to the entire population newlineboth in rural and in urban areas and drinking water needs of the human beings newlineshould be the first change on any available water Adequate water supply is newlinenot merely dependent on the existence of a water source Therefore when newlineassessing peoples level of access both to water supply and sanitation it is newlineimportant not to restrict this only to issues of distance to a source and density newlineof users but also it further involves a of range of aspects such as regularity newlinesufficiency affordability quality and safety newlineSafe drinking water is scarce in developing countries Press reports newlineand other published reports indicate that only twenty percent of operation and newlinemaintenance cost is recovered through water tariff Asian Development Bank newlineADB stipulates a specific tariff system to ensure selffinancing of the newlineoperation and maintenance cost of the builtup facilities as a condition of newlinefinancing newlineThe general objective of the study was to examine peoples newlineattitudes in regard to their willingness to pay and also affordability to pay for newlinewater and sanitation hygiene and health problems in the city of Chennai To newlineexamine the patterns of water sources supply access to consumer newlineconnections in Chennai city and infrastructures To estimate the quantity of newlinewater supplied access to water and quantity of water for multiple uses in the newlinestudy area To analyze the Willingness to Pay WTP and Affordability to Pay newlineATP for water supply among the people of Chennai and To examine and newlineanalyze sanitation hygiene illnesses indoor and outdoor risk factors for newlinehealth in the study area so as to make recommendations and suggestions newlineChennai is one of the major metropolitan cities in India newline newline newline newline newline newline newline newline newline newline newline newline newline newline
