Abstract: The invention of high intensity laser has opened many innovative newlineways to explore the nature of the matter and its interaction with optical newlineradiation In recent years much attention has been devoted to optical materials newlinewith high second order nonlinearities owing to their potential use in numerous newlinemodern research fields like nonlinear optics NLO electro optic modulation newlineEOM parametric light generation optical data storage high speed newlinetelecommunications and terahertz THz wave generation and detection etc newlineAlthough various species of NLO materials are available organic crystalline newlinematerials easily preponderate their inorganic thin film polymeric and other newlinecounterparts due to their highly aligned and stable orientation of NLO newlinechromophores in crystal lattice large electro optic coefficient small dielectric newlineconstant and loss fast response time inherent synthetic flexibility ease of newlinefabrication and integration into devices etc Elucidating the relationship newlinebetween the compositions structure and properties of materials and newlinedeveloping new materials according to this relationship are two of the most newlineimportant issues in the area of materials science Moreover high quality NLO newlinecrystals with the ability to grow to the required dimensions in the laboratory newlineare much needed to realize these applications In order to identify better newlineorganic NLO materials with noncentrosymmetric space group which is a newlinebasic precondition for a potential second harmonic generation SHG newlinematerial literature survey have been carried out using Cambridge Structural newlineDatabase CSD of Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre CCDC and newlineworld wide web www search engines like Google Yahoo etc From the newlineavailable literature it was found that relatively less number of crystalline newlinematerials only possess sufficient number of beneficial properties to render newlinethem useful in practical NLO devices Hence the prime object of the present newlinework is to identify or design novel NLO materials and study their SHG and newlineaimed to grow them as bulk single crystals newline newline
