Abstract: | Low energy consumption of membrane technology triggers its newlineapplication in the supply of high quality water purification of the blood of newlinerenal failure patients separation of valuable products from food and newlinepharmaceutical industries and removal or recovery of toxic or valuable newlinecomponents from industrial effluents However the moderate hydrophilicity newlineand relatively poor biocompatibility of the membranes limit their further newlineapplications in the field of biomedicine like hemodialysis The surface newlineproperty of membranes plays a crucial role in the improvement of newlinebiocompatibility and reduces the fouling as it determines the interaction newlinebetween proteins and membrane materials newlineIn view of the demand for the biocompatible membranes for newlinehemodialysis application the present investigation deals with the preparation newlineof hydrophilic Poly etherimide and Carboxylated Poly etherimide CPEI newlinemodified polyacrylonitrile PAN membranes for hemodialysis Membranes newlinewere prepared with different blend compositions of PANPEI and PANCPEI newlineby diffusion induced precipitation technique The results and discussions of newlineboth hemodialysis and PANCPEI blend membranes are described in chapter newlinethree and chapter four respectively newlinePANPEI blend UF membranes were prepared by immersion cum newlineprecipitation technique in the absence and presence of pore former PEG200 newlineThe effect of PANPEI blend ratio on the morphology hydrophilicity water newlinecontent porosity ultrafiltration permeation rate glass transition temperature newlinemechanical strength biocompatibility and diffusive permeability of the newlinePANPEI blend membranes were presented in the chapter three The newlinemorphology analysis by SEM scanning electron microscopy revealed that newlineincorporation of PEI resulted in the formation of spongy sublayer and newlineincreased the connectivity of pores between sublayer and bottom layer AFM newlinestudies revealed that the surface properties and porosity of the membranes newlinewere improved significantly in the PANPEI blend membranes The newlineultrafiltration permeation rate water content and membrane porosity newlineincreased |
