Abstract: | Biometric technology has developed and reached the level of maturity that it is now as a response to the growing worldwide demand for automated human identification It is a technology where the biological traits of individuals such as retinal iris scanning voice patterns dynamic signatures fingerprints face or hand measurements are used to automatically identify the individual Due to the significant increases in the computing power along with continuing advancements in sensor hardware biometric technology is being offered as a standard component in a number of security applications such as for instance the laptop computer login in PDAs in mobile phones and others Several of these devices use the hand biometrics since they are easy to capture using imaging sensors which are built in these devices Popularly used hand biometrics are the fingerprint and palmprint The fingerprint and palmprint acquisition devices that are available in large numbers in the market are those of the contact type which requires the userto place the finger or palm on the sensor Users are reported to feel uncomfortable touching a device that many people have previously touched Camera based acquisition will alleviate the need to physically touch the sensor The major problem that arises with adhoc camera based acquisition of biometric identities is the presence of affine transformations such as Translation Scaling and Rotation in the captured images |
