With the exploding increase of mobile users and the release of new newlinewireless applications the requirement for bandwidth becomes a predominant newlineissue High bandwidth and Quality of Service QoS provisioning are the newlinecritical goals in the development of communication techniques Also newlineachieving service differentiation and QoS satisfaction for heterogeneous newlineapplications is often a very complicated issue This issue refers to many newlinefields such as connection admission control CAC congestion control newlinerouting algorithm MAC protocol and scheduling scheme Among these newlinefields packet scheduling plays the most important roles in fulfilling service newlinedifferentiation and QoS provisioning It decides the order of packet newlinetransmissions and provides mechanisms for the resource allocation and newlinemultiplexing at the packet level to ensure that different types of applications newlinemeet their service requirements and the network maintains high resource newlineutilization In the current dominate layered networking architecture each layer newlineis designed and operated independently to support transparency between newlinelayers Among these layers the physical layer is responsible for raw bit newlinetransmission and the Medium Access Control MAC layer deals with the newlinemultiuser access to the shared physical medium However wireless channels newlinesuffer from time varying multipath fading and the statistical channel newlinecharacteristics of different users are different newline newlineen_US
