Abstract: Tourism is a fast growing activity and is taking shape of organised industry. But, Tourism has got significant impact on environment. It is essential to maintain a balance between the two. The research work was undertaken keeping this view in mind. Parasnath hill is an important place in Jharkhand which receive a large number of tourists every year. This place is an important religious place for Jainism followers and an important place for native as well as adventure tourism. In present study, impact of tourism on biomass was specially studied. Biomass is an indication of overall health of ecosystem. Biomass of some herbs growing in tourism spots were compared with the biomass of same herb growing in control area. A marked reduction in both above ground as well as below ground biomass was recorded in tourism area. A marked change in phytosociology of plants was also noticed. newline It is therefore urgent to think about sustainable tourism otherwise Parasnath hills in particular and tourism places in general will be dangerous. newline newline
